Before You Move, Breathe

Claudia Casal

Breathing is the first thing we do when we’re born and the last before we leave. Yet it’s amazing how often we forget how to truly breathe while we’re alive.

In Pilates, breath is more than just air moving in and out — it’s the foundation of every movement. Conscious breathing helps activate the right muscles, supports control, and releases tension in the body and mind.

Many people are surprised during their first classes when they realize they weren’t really breathing fully. Learning to breathe means expanding the rib cage, using the diaphragm, and letting each movement flow naturally with the breath. It’s about tuning in to your body’s natural rhythm.

When you learn to breathe first, everything changes — exercises feel smoother, there’s less tension in your neck and shoulders, and your mind calms down. Breath connects your body and mind like a bridge: without it, movement is mechanical; with it, movement comes alive.

Breathe first. Move next. Feel the difference.
